How to brief an ice rink refrigeration system

Load, climate, ice temperature, recovery and service access in one buyer checklist.

The refrigeration brief should state the ice load, operating schedule and recovery target before the equipment is selected.

Describe the ice and the schedule

Start with ice area, sport, target surface temperature, hours of operation, session length, resurfacing frequency and the recovery expected after a full session. A training center, a public rink and a competition arena will not create the same load profile.

Describe the building and the climate

Ambient temperature, humidity, solar exposure, envelope performance, plant-room location, electrical supply, water, drainage and service access all affect the package. The most important number is rarely the only number.

Show the assumptions

Ice area, ambient design point, target temperatures, operating hours, peak occupancy and recovery expectations.

Controls

Make performance visible

Instrumentation, alarms, setpoints, circuit identification and records that let the operator understand the system.

Handover

Plan beyond start-up

Commissioning tests, training, maintenance access, spares and a clear escalation route after opening.

When the brief includes these points, supplier proposals become easier to compare and late changes are easier to price. It also gives the design team a better basis for coordinating the plant room and ice pad.
